Thermal response and edgewise compression failure of thermally degraded sandwich composite structures

Manufacturing and repair tasks using additive subtractive laser processing (e.g., paint stripping drilling) are becoming widely used in ships, aircrafts, bridge structures. As with fire exhaust impingement, such low level heat fluxes (<10 W) could negatively impact mechanical properties of composite In this work, thermal excursions were simulated via continuous-wave exposure the center region a sandwich construction (i.e., E-glass fiber-reinforced vinyl ester matrix facesheets PVC foam core). Sandwich specimens investigated different slenderness ratios, facesheet thicknesses, core thicknesses type materials. The 3-D temperature history response was measured spatially calibrated IR camera technology to map out resulting damage state across thickness specimens. morphology interfacial debonding postulated profiles evidenced by X-ray CT images. Depending on ratio volume material heated above Tg, thermally-induced significantly affects edgewise compression strengths failure modes.
